The 2012 Journey:

__________________________________________________________________________

The Route

Cycle for Sight presents a great opportunity for participants to rediscover Ontario’s rich countryside and fascinating towns. The journey will be an experience that you will always remember.  After months of preparation and training, the ride will be the ultimate challenge. You've completed your fundraising, now all you have to do is ride!

CYCLE FOR SIGHT CENTURY RIDE

Cycle for Sight has added an optional Century Ride distance. For those of you who don't think 140 km is enough have the option of adding on a 20 km loop between the waterstop in Glencairn and the village of Brentwood. Details on this additional route are inside this year's Turn-By-Turn Ride Guide June 1, 2012.

Cycle for Sight 2012 Route Turn-by-Turn Ride Guide and Ride Day Participant Info Package will be posted on the website June 1, 2012.

Thanks to the local Lions Clubs for sponsoring our 4 rest stops along the way, King, Schomberg, Alliston and Stayner; where riders can STOP and grab a snack, take a washroom break and rehydrate.  You will also receive plenty of encouragement from team members, volunteers and fellow Cycle for Sight supporters along the way.  Cycle for Sight will provide support vehicles en route, bike mechanics and EMS Ambulance for your safety.  Please do not encourage family or friends to drive along with you, please ask them to meet you in Collingwood.  The more vehicles on the road the more difficult it will be for cyclists to enjoy their journey.

Cycle for Sight has 2 ride options:

  • 140 km ride from Toronto to Collingwood
  • 70 km ride from Alliston to Collingwood

Meet Up and Pack Up and Event Days

Date and location to be Announced - Meet Up and Pack Up

Cycle for Sight will host our pre-ride event Meet Up and Pack Up. Meet Up and Pack Up is a great event that will allow you to drop off your post-ride bag with a change of clothes, towel and toiletries, as well as hand in any last minute donations that you may have at home. In addition, you'll be able to pick up your CFS custom jersey and BMO swag bags full of free goodies and discounts.

All riders are strongly encouraged to attend the meet up and pack up. The morning of event day is early enough and crazy enough with photos, speeches and fun that you won't want to be messing around with your duffel bags. Once we confirm the location of this years 2012 meet up and pack up location we will certainly let you know.  Thanks so much.

Saturday, June 23, 2012 - Event Day!

Riders are asked to arrive at 7am in order to allow time for photos, speeches and mingling with your fellow riders - as well as BMO the Bear! We will ride at 8am sharp! You'll also need to check-in so we know you're there and to give you your rider licence plate and your wristband which grants you access to a post ride lunch and FREE Creemore Springs beer.

What to carry with you on ride day

Two water bottles - Decide if you want sports drink or plain water or one with more carbs. Remember that e load sports drinks will be available at all rest stops along the route, so you can refill your bottles at each stop.  Read the Hydration article and more importantly experiment during training to see what works best for you. Do not experiment on ride day especially with sugar or caffeine.  Hydration Article

Snack - Sometimes you just need an extra boost. Have something with you to get you to the next stop. Again experiment with what works for you during training. Watch out for sugars that can give you a rapid boost but cause you to crash later.

All in one tool - May also be called a mini tool. Has the bits needed to tighten or loosen things on your bike plus a chain tool.

Spare inner tube and tire levers

Spare Tire

Pump - Carry either a mini pump or a frame pump.

Patch kit

ID and Health Card

Credit Card and Cash

About your bike

Bike condition - Make sure your bike is well tuned and your derailleur and brakes are in good working order. While we may have mechanics available, this is not the place to come for a tune up.

Road bike - Make sure you have a bike that is capable of keeping pace with the group. A combination of bike and riders ability is key. You will want to be able to keep a rolling average speed around 25 km.

Tire pressure - More tire problems occur when tires are not properly inflated. Always check tire pressure just prior to riding.

What to Pack

  • Change of clothes, including shoes that you can walk around in and maybe a hat if helmet head is not your thing. Think dry!
  • Toiletries like soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and face wash to remove the grime of the road, etc. and a bath towel.
  • Plastic bag to hold wet items like your nasty shoes, socks, shirt and shorts.
  • You can buy small packs that mount under your seat or on your handle bars to carry this stuff,  or you can use the 3 pockets in the back of your cycling shirt, or some of each.
  • Bike frame protection. We recommend foam pipe wrap (home depot), or bubble wrap or blankets to protect your bike on the ride home.
  • Some rain protection for hanging around
