About The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB)

The Foundation Fighting Blindness, Canada’s largest registered charity for sight saving research, has contributed over $19 million to cutting edge research into the causes, treatments and cures for retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration (AMD) and related retinal eye diseases. “A Cure is in Sight” thanks to Foundation funded discoveries.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a hereditary disease that strikes children and young adults and results in progressive, ever-narrowing tunnel vision leading to blindness.  There are 30,000 people with the disease in Canada and 3,000 more are diagnosed yearly.

Macular degeneration (AMD) causes progressive loss of central vision. Approximately one million people in Canada are losing their sight to this disease.  An astonishing 70% of people over the age of 60 worldwide will be affected by AMD in the next 15 years.

How the fundraised dollars are used

The FFB has funded dozens of research discoveries at universities and hospitals across Canada to identify the causes of genetic forms of blindness. Today, these discoveries have helped bring scientists to this very exciting time in vision research, translating knowledge into treatments to restore the gift of sight.

Thanks to the supporters and sponsors, cures are really in sight for more than a million Canadians losing their vision to blinding diseases. Research is what gives people hope that treatments and cures for devastating eye diseases will be found.
