The 2012 Journey:

__________________________________________________________________________

The Route

Cycle for Sight presents a great opportunity for participants to rediscover Ottawa’s rich countryside and fascinating towns.  The journey will be an experience that you will always remember.  After months of preparation and training, the ride on Sunday June 3, 2012 is the ultimate challenge.

The ride route options include:

  • Manotick Watson’s Mill to Merrickville (100 km loop)
  • Manotick Watson’s Mill to Kemptville (60 km loop)

The Cycle for Sight 2012 route map and Turn-by-Turn guide will be posted May 15, 2012 and given to all registered riders prior to the event.  The reason for not posting the route at this time is for riders safety. The planning committee will access all road conditions and unforeseen road construction 2 weeks prior to the event to ensure the route is safe to proceed.

Big thanks to the local Lions Clubs for sponsoring our rest stops along the route; STOP and grab a snack, take a washroom break and be sure to rehydrate.  You will also receive plenty of encouragement from team members, volunteers and fellow Cycle for Sight supporters along the way.  Cycle for Sight will provide support vehicles en route, bike mechanics and EMS Ambulance for your safety.

Please do not encourage family or friends to drive along with you, please ask them to meet you in Manotick.  The more vehicles on the road the more difficult it will be for cyclists to enjoy their journey.

What to carry with you on ride day

Two water bottles - Decide if you want sports drinks or plain water or one with more carbs.  Remember that e load sports drinks will be available at all rest stops along the route, so you can refill your bottles at each stop.  Read the Hydration article and more importantly experiment during training to see what works best for you. Do not experiment on ride day especially with sugar or caffeine.  Hydration is the key!

Snack - Sometimes you just need an extra boost. Have something with you to get you to the next stop. Again, experiment with what works for you during training. Watch out for sugars that can give you a rapid boost but cause you to crash later.

All in one tool - May also be called a mini-tool. Has the bits needed to tighten or loosen things on your bike plus a chain tool.

Spare inner tube and tire levers

Spare Tire

Pump - Carry either a mini pump or a frame pump.

Patch kit

ID and Health Card

Credit Card and Cash

Charged Cell Phone

Optional GPS

About your bike

Bike condition - Make sure your bike is well tuned and your derailleur and brakes are in good working order. While we may have mechanics available, this is not the place to come for a tune up.

Road bike - Make sure you have a bike that is capable of keeping pace with the group. A combination of bike and riders ability is key. You will want to be able to keep a rolling average speed around 25 km.

Tire pressure - More tire problems occur when tires are not properly inflated. Always check tire pressure just prior to riding.
