About The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB)
The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) is a national vision research charity founded in 1974. We have grown into Canada’s leading private supporter of world-class retina research. Since our inception, we have funded over $17M in groundbreaking research at major hospitals and universities in Canada. We are an organization and community of volunteers, scientists and supporters, fighting to restore the gift of sight to those affected by genetic forms of blindness, specifically retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and macular degeneration (MD), the two leading causes of blindness among children and seniors, respectively.
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a hereditary disease that strikes children and young adults and results in progressive, ever-narrowing tunnel vision leading to blindness. There are 30,000 people with the disease in Canada and 3,000 more are diagnosed yearly.
Macular degeneration (MD) causes progressive loss of central vision. Approximately one million people in Canada are losing their sight to this disease. An astonishing 70% of people over the age of 60 worldwide will be affected by MD in the next 15 years.

How the fundraised dollars are used
The FFB has funded dozens of research discoveries at universities and hospitals across Canada to identify the causes of genetic forms of blindness. Today, these discoveries have helped bring scientists to this very exciting time in vision research, translating knowledge into treatments to restore the gift of sight.
Thanks to the supporters and sponsors, cures are really in sight for more than a million Canadians losing their vision to blinding diseases. Research is what gives people hope that treatments and cures for devastating eye diseases will be found.
…because of you cures are in sight
